What’s so special about these green tea hot chocolate bombs
You’v seen so many matcha hot chocolate bombs, what makes these extra special?
- They’re made out of matcha!
- Each one contains white chocolate instead of regular chocolate to let the green matcha shine.
- They are a little smaller than your regular hot cocoa bombs, but still pack all the flavor in the world.
- They’re super fun to make and make for the cutest Christmas gift!
Ingredients to make matcha white chocolate hot chocolate bombs
Here are the ingredients you will need for your matcha hot chocolate bombs:
- White chocolate- I used white baking chocolate for this recipe but you can also use white chocolate chips too.
- Matcha powder– I use ceremonial grade matcha powder for the best flavored matcha drink.
- Heavy cream – The heavy cream is used to make the matcha truffle that the matcha bomb will be filled with.
How to make matcha chocolate bombs?
First you will need to make the matcha powder truffles.
- Melt the white chocolate, heavy whipping cream, and the matcha in a microwave safe bowl. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it chill in the fridge or the freezer for 1 hour or until it’s fully set.
- Scoop out 1 teaspoon or truffle mixture and roll it to get the perfect little truffles and set aside.
Now let’s make the matcha spheres for our white hot chocolate bombs.
- Melt the rest of the chocolate with the matcha in a microwave safe bowl, divide that into the half sphere mold and spread it all around. Freeze for 10 minutes or until set.
- Assemble the white hot chocolate bombs with matcha, filling each hot chocolate bomb with one matcha truffle. Drizzle with some extra white chocolate if you’d like.
- Enjoy by pouring hot milk over one hot chocolate bomb for the perfect cozy matcha drink.
How much milk should I use for 1 matcha green tea hot chocolate bomb?
Since these matcha hot chocolate bombs are made using white chocolate they tend to be a little on the sweeter side. To balance our the flavors you will need to pour about 1 &½ cup to 2 cups of hot milk over each hot chocolate bomb.
Tips for the perfect white hot chocolate bombs
To make sure your matcha bombs turn out the same as ours, follow these simple tips.
- Make sure that the bowl that you’re melting the chocolate in is fully dry– Chocolate doesn’t mix well with water so dry your bowl and spatula fully.
- Make sure that the mold is fully coated in chocolate to have a sturdy hot chocolate bomb- Enough chocolate is key to keep these hot chocolate bombs intact when you fill them up.
- Work quickly to assemble the chocolate spheres- The chocolate spheres are pretty fragile, so work fast to avoid them melted all over the place.
- Wear gloves if possible- Our hands tend to get warm very quickly and that can leave finger prints on your chocolate.
- If the chocolate is melting too quickly place them back in the freezer for a few minutes.

Equipment
- Half sphere mold, check description for the specific mold I have.
Ingredients
Matcha truffles
- 2 oz white chocolate About ¼ cup white chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
- ¼ teaspoon matcha powder
For the white chocolate matcha shell.
- 6 oz white chocolate About ¾ cup
- 1 & ½ teaspoon matcha powder
extra 1 oz white chocolate for drizzling (optional)
Instructions
Make the matcha truffles
- First, start by placing the 2 oz or ¼ cup white chocolate, the heavy whipping cream and the matcha powder in a small microwave safe bowl and microwave for 60 seconds. If you still have chunks that are not fully melted keep stirring until it melts. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap making sure that the plastic touched the matcha chocolate mixture. place in the fridge of the freezer to chill until fully set. This can take 30-45 minutes.
- Once the matcha truffle mixture is ready, scoop out 1 teaspoon of mixture at a time, roll then place on a plate. If you are ready to use them, leave the plate on your work surface if not place the plate back into the freezer until you are ready to assemble.
While the truffle mixture is setting, make the matcha shells.
- In a medium bowl, add in the 6oz or ¾ cup white chocolate with the matcha powder. Melt in the microwave in 30 second increments making sure to stir between each time.
- Once the chocolate if fully melted, add a tablespoon of the melted chocolate into each mild cavity. Using the back of a spoon, spread the chocolate mixture onto the sides of each mold. Place the mold in the freezer for 15 minutes or until the shells are fully set.
- Once the chocolate is set, pull it out of the mold and start assembling. Press one of the empty chocolate domes against a slightly heated pan of plate. place the matcha truffle in it, heat up the other half and stick them together. You will have to work fast so that the chocolate spheres don't fully melt and stick to the other half. You can now melt the rest of the white chocolate, place it in a plastic bag and lightly drizzle the matcha hot chocolate bombs.
- Store these matcha white hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container in the fridge and use within a week.

Vana
Hey is there a alternitive for heavy cream, from domeinen who can’t have dairy at all?
Lifestyle of a Foodie
Hello Vana,
You could use coconut cream instead of the heavy cream and dairy free chocolate chips.
Hope that helped 🙂

These look awesome…I see it needs to be refrigerated but what about shipping them to family? Would it be okay via shipping??
Lifestyle of a Foodie
I would not ship these. Both because they are very fragile but they also have cream in them. Maybe shipping would be more realistic in the winter time if you’re shipping it from a cold place to a cold place? Try chosing a very quick shipping option and drop it off right before the mail pick up truck gets there. Maybe something overnight? Then the people get refrigirate them right away. I have never shipped these but if you do, definitely let us know how that works out!
