Here are the ingredients you will need to make this chocolate chunk copycat cookie. Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the full detailed ingredient measurements.

  • Light brown sugar & granulated sugar– This cookie uses a mixture of sugars to get them to have the perfect consistency and texture.
  • Shortening & butter– Shortening has a higher melting point than butter, so we use a mix of the two so the cookies stay thick instead of spreading thin. I used butter-flavored Crisco. The butter flavor adds back richness.
  • Honey – For chew, not sweetness. It holds moisture, so these stay soft for days instead of drying out.
  • Egg– This will be the binding agent of our cookies. I like to use large eggs at room temperature.
  • Vanilla extract– Vanilla pairs so well with the honey flavors of this cookie.
  • Flour– All-purpose flour works great for this cookie recipe.
  • Oats– Add chew without tasting like an oatmeal cookie. Don’t sub quick oats, they disappear into the dough.
  • Baking powder & baking soda– These will give our cookies a little extra height.
  • Salt– Always use a little salt in your baked goods to balance out the sweetness of your cookies.
  • Chocolate chunks – Use milk chocolate chunks and semi-sweet chocolate chunks to get that iconic Chick-fil-A flavor.

  1. Cream the butter, shortening, and sugar together in a stand mixerbowl.

  3. Stir in the flour, baking soda, baking powder, oats, and salt into the wet ingredients and mix.
  4. Scrape down the sides with a silicone spatula from time to time to make sure everything is well combined.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chunks, cover the bowl, and chill for 1 hour or overnight.
  6. Scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake. You can even top each cookie dough ball with a few more semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks for a more impressive look.
  7. Let the cookies cool down and enjoy!

This recipe is great made in a stand mixer but if you don’t have that feel free to mix your ingredients in a medium bowl using a hand mixer.

Frequently asked questions – FAQ

If you have the time, I prefer the chilled dough method because it results in cookies that are a tad bit thicker since the chilling allows the flour to absorb more liquid. It also allows the flavors of the chocolate chunk cookies to develop even more.

If you decide to make these cookies without chilling the dough, bake them for 1-2 minutes less.

How to store these Chick Fil A cookies?

These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. You can also pop them in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 7 days.

Once you’re ready to enjoy them pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to get them ooey gooey again and enjoy!

Can I freeze chick fil a chocolate chunk cookies?

Yes! You can also freeze these baked cookies in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Once you’re ready to enjoy them thaw them in the fridge overnight or on the countertop for less.

My favorite way to thaw these is to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds and enjoy them!

Can I make mini Chick Fil A cookies?

Yes, you can! Instead of making 16 larger cookies, you will be able to make 32 smaller ones. Instead of baking them for 13-14 minutes, bake them for 10 minutes instead.

Do Chick-Fil-A cookies have nuts?

These cookies don’t have nuts in them. They do have oats which create sun a fun texture but if you want to add in some nuts, I would highly recommend adding in toasted walnuts ot even toasted pecans!

Phenomenal. I think it’s the shortening and the honey. So flipping good!! Chewy and kinda dense deliciousness. I’ve tried multiple recipes here and they all have been awesome. 100% keeper recipe. I initially weighed out my Costco organic AP flour to what would be the recipe measurements and when it was mixed up I did feel like I needed a little more. I would like to try to figure out what the weight in grams would be vs cup measurements. I’ll have to track better next go around. 🙂

    1. Chahinez Tabet Aoul says:

Thank you, this made my day! On the flour: 384g is the weight to go by, so if it felt loose at that, the usual culprit is butter that got a little too soft rather than the flour itself. The gram weight is the more reliable number, cups vary a lot depending on how you scoop. If it still feels loose next time, add 15g at a time so you don’t overshoot into dry. Would love to hear how it goes!

I haven’t tried the recipe yet but I think it’s missing cinnamon. I came here looking for a copycat while eating a CFA cookie and I definitely taste cinnamon. What is the honey for? With all that sugar I’d swap the honey for cinnamon unless there’s a need for it?

    1. Chahinez Tabet Aoul says:

Good palate! The honey isn’t there for sweetness, it’s for texture. It’s hygroscopic, meaning it pulls in and holds moisture, which is what keeps these chewy and soft for days instead of going crisp. Swapping it out would change the texture more than the flavor.

If you’re tasting cinnamon, add ½ teaspoon with the dry ingredients and keep the honey, they’re doing completely different jobs. Would love to know if that gets you closer!

This recipe was amazing! I’ve worked at Chick-fil-A for around 3 years now, and the cookies are one of favorite menu items. I can’t believe it took me this long to make them at home. They weren’t exactly the same–I used regular shortening instead of butter-flavoured, because I didn’t want to go to the store, as well as a but less chocolate, again because I didn’t want to go to the store–but they were still amazing!

    1. Chahinez Tabet Aoul says:

That’s awesome! Having the inside perspective makes the comparison even better. And honestly, those swaps are totally fine. Even with regular shortening and a bit less chocolate, the cookies still come out soft and chewy because the base is what really makes them work.

  4. Emily says:

I halved the recipe and used light brown sugar. My dough was very dry and the cookies came out pretty floury and much lighter than your pictures – I’m sure it’s something I did wrong. Would light vs dark brown sugar make that significant of a difference? I’d like to try again with a full recipe and just confirm I didn’t have an incorrect measurement!

    1. Chahinez Tabet Aoul says:

Light vs dark brown sugar shouldn’t cause that much of a difference so it’s likely not the issue. A dry dough can come from too much flour. If you didn’t, try using a kitchen scale to weigh next time with better accuracy and let me know if that helps 🙂

Can you use all butter instead of crisco?

    1. Chahinez Tabet Aoul says:

Hi Traci! You technically can use all butter, but I wouldn’t recommend it, the Crisco is what gives these cookies that soft, thick texture that makes them taste just like the Chick-fil-A ones! Butter has more water content so your cookies will spread more and come out thinner and crispier. If you’re okay with a slightly different result, go for it, but for the best copycat version I’d stick with the combo! Hope that helps! 🤍

Love this recipe!! They really do taste like CFA cookies!
I think the recipe only discusses freezing baked cookies that are already baked but we love to make the dough, shape the dough for each cookie, then freeze that cookie dough so we can bake a few cookies fresh when desired! It requires a few more minutes of baking than usual but it’s great to have cookies on demand!

    1. Chahinez Tabet Aoul says:

That’s a great way to use it! I love that!

Cookies were really good! However my cookies are not as dark as yours even when I followed the recipe precisely..any idea what I did wrong?

    1. Chahinez says:

Glad you liked them! The color difference could just be from the color of your dark brown sugar. Mine was pretty dark so that’s why it has that look.

These really hit the spot on my craving for chick fil a cookies. They are better and so delicious 😋 thank you so much!

  10. Ashley says:

This recipe looks amazing! Does the shortening have to be butter flavored? I already have regular shortening, so I’m wondering if I can use what I have on hand!

    1. Chahinez says:

Thank you! 😊 You can definitely use regular shortening if that’s what you have on hand, but the butter-flavored shortening will give the recipe a little extra richness and depth of flavor. Either way, it should still turn out delicious!
