Chocolate brownie mug cake. A treat that you can make in your microwave in less than 1 minute! Doesn’t sound believable, does it? This mug brownie is fudgy, full of chocolate, and pairs amazingly with a vanilla bean ice cream scoop. Next time those brownie cravings hit, try this one out.
I’m a chocolate lover for sure! I will take anything chocolate and devour it in .1 seconds. Whether it’s my Chocolate No Churn Ice Cream with Brownies or these wonderful Bakery Style Brownies With no Cocoa I’m always ready for dessert if it involves fudgy chocolate goodness.
The beauty of this specific brownie is that it can be made and enjoyed almost as soon as you get the craving. It takes 30 seconds to throw all the ingredients together and another 45 seconds to bake it, doesn’t get better than that.
This is my go to brownie mug cake recipe when I want a quick and easy chocolate fix.
I actually am obsessed with small batch recipes, you can actually find some awesome tips to make any recipe small batch here. But since I love small batch recipes so much, I decided to go the extra mile and make a small batch brownie recipe, or a single serve brownie recipe should I say for you guys ( and also for myself because let’s be honest, I have had this 3 nights in a row at this point)
So no leftovers, no messy dishes from the making process. This recipe can be made in a single mug with very few ingredients and very few dishes too.

What’s so special about this brownie in a mug recipe?
This recipe is dear and near to my heart because:
- It will be ready in about 1 minute.
- Of so full of chocolate
- Can be made at midnight for a dessert that can be enjoyed immediately
- It’s a brownie recipe that makes just one serving
- Can be perfectly cooked in the microwave
Ingredients needed for this mug brownie
To make this chocolate mug brownie you need the following ingredients:
- Butter- I use salted butter in this recipe but you can use any butter you have on hand! That’s the beauty of this mug brownie.
- Semi sweet chocolate chips– You can use either semi sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate too.
- Egg yolk– You will need one egg yolk from a large egg.
- Brown sugar– Some light or dark brown sugar to make this brownie sweet, moist and fudgy.
- Vanilla– The vanilla is optional but is strongly recommended.
- Flour– All purpose flour is what I used here.
- Extra chocolate chips and nuts to mix in the batter– This is optional, but you can add mix-ins to your brownies for a fancier dessert.
What size mug do I need for a mug brownie?
This recipe works best in a smaller mug. The one I used is from Ikea and can hold about 8 ounces or one cup. This brownie will look very small if you make it in a large mug but it will still taste the same!
Can I double this recipe?
You sure can! You can double the recipe in a small bowl then divide it between two mugs and bake in the microwave. The baking time might take a little longer if you are baking two mug brownies at a time though. So keep that in mind.
How to make a brownie mug cake?
- First, start by melting the butter in the mug in the microwave. Add in the chocolate chips and stir until completely melted. Microwave the mixture as needed until the chocolate is completely melted.
- Add in the egg yolk, the brown sugar, and the vanilla if you’re using some and stir until incorporated, Add in the flour and stir one more time just until the flour disappears. At this point you can add the chocolate chips and gently stir to get them incorporated to skip this step.
- Cook the brownie on high in the microwave for 45 seconds. Microwave temperatures vary so you can cook it for an additional 15 seconds if necessary.
Brownie add ins options:
This chocolate brownie mug cake is a super easy recipe to make when those brownie cravings hit, but no one said it had to be a plain boring brownie recipe. Here are a few things I like to do to make this mug brownie extra fancy:
- Mix in chocolate chips- Extra chocolate never hurt nobody!
- Mix in peanut butter chips– Make this a peanut butter brownie mug cake by adding peanut butter chips… So delicious.
- Mix in nuts– I love a good brownie with nuts in it. Add 1 tablespoon of chopped nuts to your brownie batter before you cook it in the microwave.
- Make it a molten chocolate mug cake- Place a Lindt chocolate in the center on top of the brownie batter and cook in the microwave for the perfect melty center.
- Top it with cream cheese frosting-
- Top it with a scoop of ice cream
Can this mug brownie be made in advance?
Unfortunately, no. This brownie recipe is best when made and eaten right away. I mean it doesn’t take more than 5 minute to make it so you should have enough time to make it right as the craving for brownies hit.
The texture becomes different as this brownie cools down, so make sure to have your ice cream ready as soon as you pop this baby in the microwave to enjoy it right away.
Tips for making the best brownie in a mug:
- Mix everything well, but don’t over mix the batter once you add in the flour.
- You don’t need to grease your mug. The brownie will get a little stuck to the mug regardless. To clean it, just soak it with a little water and whatever brownie was stuck on the mug will wipe off easily.
- This recipe is made for a medium sized mug so don’t be shocked if it doesn’t fill up a jumbo mug!
- If you are making more than one brownie mug cake at a time, you will need to increase you microwave cook time by a little bit.

I usually don’t leave comments on recipes, but this brownie is sooo good! It was the only recipe I could find online that didn’t require cocoa powder. I used milk chocolate and was quite pleased with the results, although next time I make it I think I’ll opt for semi-sweet or dark chocolate. Will definitely be making again π
Chahinez
That’s wonderful to hear! Using milk chocolate must have given the brownies a deliciously rich flavor. Switching to semi-sweet or dark chocolate could add a deeper, more intense chocolate flavor. I’m glad you enjoyed the recipe, and I’m sure they’ll be just as delicious with your next chocolate choice!

Someone had toβ¦ so, I substituted applesauce for the butter, Splenda brown sugar, and whole wheat flour. Doubled the recipe and used a (very) small glass loaf pan. It was soooooo good! Next time Iβll add some cocoa too! Just sharing if anyone wants to try a lower fat higher fiber version.
Chahinez
Love that!

I made this, but used sugar-free semisweet chocolate and sweetener, as well as whole wheat flour. It came out amazing! It would be even better with some ice cream.
Chahinez
Yay! Glad to hear you enjoyed the recipe Michael!

These things are incredibly rich in a way that is almost overpowering. I used the optional additional chips definitely would not use them if I make this again.
Chahinez
Yes! Brownies can definitely be very rich but using less chocolate chips would help you with that π
Lili
my new standard is that if there isn’t some tart in the comments complaining that the brownie recipe is too fudgy, I don’t want it π
Amanda
I just made this and it was delicious! I used a dark chocolate Ghirardelli square-so yummy. The perfect brownie, really. Ty so much for sharing!
Chahinez
That sounds AMAZING!

I made my brownie wrong by not mixing before adding flour, then, I added an egg and it looked even worse. MY brother said the brownie he made tasted good, but when he tasted mine he said it was bad. And to top it all of, I dropped the cup my brownie was in and the cup and the brownie was destroyed. I will make your recipe again and it hopefully wont be a disaster like the one I just made.
Chahinez
Oh no!! I’m so sorry to hear that! Make sure to follow the directions exactly next time and I hope it turns out better next time π
