Frequently asked questions – FAQ
How to store these chocolate chip toll house bars?
Once these cookie bars are baked, allow them to cool down fully before transferring them to an airtight container. They will store at room temperature for up to 4 days.
You can place them in the fridge for longer. I would just microwave them a little to get them ooey gooey again before enjoying.

Can I freeze these cookie bars?
I like to wrap each cooled down cookie bar individually in plastic wrap then transfer to a large Ziploc bag or a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. You can pull out at a time whenever the cravings hit or you can pull them all out and allow them to thaw on the counter at room temperature.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Absolutely! I would prepared the dough and spread it onto the jelly roll pan, wrap tightly with plastic wrap then chill in the fridge. Whenever you are ready to bake them pull them out of the fridge and allow the cookie dough to get back to room temperature then bake in the preheated oven.
Can I half this recipe?
You sure can in a different size pan! Bake it in an 8×8 inch pan for about 18-19 minutes depending on your oven.

How do I know the cookie bars are done?
They’re ready when the edges are golden brown and the center looks set but still slightly soft.
What mix-ins can I use besides chocolate chips?
Try peanut butter chips, M&Ms, White chocolate chips, or even dried cranberries!
How to take these cookie bars to the next level?
- Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top right after baking.
- Drizzle melted chocolate over the cooled bars.
- Turn these cookie bars into ice cream sandwiches by adding a scoop of your favorite ice cream in the center.

made these they were a hit! fr my mom wanted them and we had a crew of guys working on the house they agreed too! they could be baked a lil longer that just may be our oven
I am so glad everyone enjoyed them 🙂
The instructions in the actual recipe (not sure what all the other verbiage says) say to use a jelly roll pan and that it measures 13×10 inches. A jellyroll pan is 15 x 10. Please confirm.
But I don’t have either of those, only a 13 x 9 pan. How would I adjust my oven temperature and/or cooking time to go from 15 x 10 (I think your recipe will say) to a 13 x 9 pan?
Hi! So the this is the jelly roll pan I used: https://www.360cookware.com/products/stainless-steel-jelly-roll-pan?srsltid=AfmBOopL3wZSrZ2FVudTI26RaZp4Odc_PCQRX6cJ0spW37O5yuRzqeP5
This company’s is a 13×10 so that’s where the confusion is. But a 13×9 will work just fine as well. Your cookies will be a little thicker so just add an extra minute or two to the bake time and you should be good 🙂
can i prepare the dough a day before put it in the fridge and then bake it the next?
You sure can! I would make the cookie dough and spread it on your baking sheet then wrap with plastic wrap and bake the next day. I would also add a few more minutes to the baking time!
I haven’t made these for years. Thanks for the recipe. And yes. They’re still a hit!
Glad to hear it!
In the instructions, the adding of the vanilla is included in the sugar addition as well as the egg addition. I know from experience that the vanilla should be added with the eggs, not when creaming the butter and both sugars. Thought that this should be fixed when a first time baker reads these directions. Anyone should make these bars because they are delicious! A recipe should be written underneath in the notes for an easy way to switch the recipe from a cookie to bar recipe.
Noted! thank you 🙂
I used milk chocolate chips and half a cup of butterscotch chips. So yummy!
Sounds delicious!
Can you clarify pls .. one part says about cooled melted butter, but then the recipe says softened butter . So do you melt it then return to soft or do you just use softened butter . Thx
Both will work, you just want to use room temp butter, but you can melt it and let it cool if you’re running short on time.
These cookies change lives. I’ve made them 4 times in the last three weeks probably cause they’re so good and anyone that tries them loooves them. Thanks for the recipe!!
Yay!! that made me so happy to read 🙂
