Frequently asked questions – FAQ

What Should I Use to Shake My Drink?

There are a ton of things you can use. An empty jam jar would be a great way to use something you already have on hand, but you could also use a cocktail shaker or even a mason jar. That’s the beauty of this drink!

Can I Use Another Milk for this Recipe?

Any type of milk works great in this Starbucks version of the hazelnut shaken espresso. My milk of choice has to be anything super creamy, so think whole milk, soy milk, or even almond milk. Coconut milk would be a little lighter but by making this drink in the comfort of your own home you can really use your favorite milk to create the tastiest drink of your dreams.

Can I Make this Drink Hot?

You can make a hot hazelnut latte but technically you can’t really make a shaken espresso drink because we are shaking it with ice. I guess the next best thing would be to froth your milk or top the drink with cold foam but that’s about it.

How to Make Homemade Hazelnut Syrup

To make the hazelnut syrup from scratch, take your 1 cup of peeled hazelnuts and roughly chop them. Pot those in a medium saucepan with one cup of water and one cup of granulated sugar. Allow the mixture to come to a light simmer over medium heat, stirring from time to time to help dissolve the sugar. Allow the syrup to simmer for 8-10 minutes before straining the hazelnuts out and use in your drink.

How Much Caffeine Does this Shaken Espresso Drink Have?

This drink has two espresso shots. Since each one has about 65mg of caffeine, this drink will end up sitting at 130mg of caffeine. The perfect morning or afternoon pick me up!

What Are Some Fun Variations to Add to this Starbucks Hazelnut Iced Shaken Espresso?

  • Use a mixture of syrups in your drink. Hazelnut with caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or even vanilla syrup adds a delicious depth of flavor.
  • Top your iced drink with your favorite cold foam.
  • Add a sprinkle of salt on top of your drink for a delicious sweet and salty coffee experience.

I Don’t Have an Espresso Machine, What Can I Use to Make My Drink?

An espresso maker comes in handy when trying to make an espresso-based drink. I love my Breville espresso maker, but the Nespresso-brand capsules and machine would also work just fine.

For something less bulky, I’d say an Italian espresso maker which can be used easily on the stovetop. But as a last case scenario, you could always use instant coffee with 1/4 cup hot water. Use that instead of hot coffee, just be aware that the flavors will be a little different.
