This is the best Dutch apple pie bars with crumb topping.

I am not sure why but this year I am on a crazy apple kick. Everything from apple drinks to cheesecake and cookies is being made at my house on repeat!

After making the apple cheesecake bars with the streusel topping I thought why not try the same recipe but with a cinnamon nutmeg apple layer in the middle instead of cheesecake? Oh my goodness! Everyone loved these even more than the other desserts.

It has a butter shortbread crust, tender yet crunchy apple slices in the center, and a golden brown crunchy oat streusel to bring it all together.

Why do you need to make this recipe?

  • This is a fun twist on the more traditional apple pie served for the holiday season.
  • It makes it easier to serve a crow because you can slice this dessert into 9 large squares or 16 smaller ones.
  • This recipe has three distinct layers that all mesh together to create the perfect fall and apple dessert.

Ingredients for this easy apple pie bars recipe

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this fall-season apple dessert staple. Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the full detailed ingredient measurements.

  • Butter
  • All-purpose flour
  • Brown sugar & granulated sugar
  • Salt
  • Vanilla extract
  • Apple slices- I love doing a combination of fresh apples. I like to do granny smith apples for something that is more on the tart side to help balance out the sweetness of these bars and the pink lady apples to add that extra sweetness!
  • Cinnamon & nutmeg- The combination of cinnamon and nutmeg will create those loved apple pie spices.
  • Oats
  • Salt

Frequently asked questions – FAQ

How to store these apple pie bars?

You can store your apple pie bars in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. The crust and the buttery crumb topping will lose some of their freshness the longer they sit.

Can I freeze these bars?

Definitely! I love slicing them and individually wrapping them in plastic before placing them in a freezer-safe bag and freezing them for up to 3 months.

You can also place them in an airtight container and freeze them that way. Make sure to divide each layer with parchment paper or wax paper to keep them from sticking to one another.

Whenever you are ready to enjoy them thaw in the fridge overnight.

What can I top my apple bars with?

Some of my favorite toppings for this perfect fall dessert are

  • Drizzle of caramel sauce
  • Dusting of powdered sugar
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce

What is the difference between regular apple pie and Dutch apple pie?

The difference here is simple. The regular apple pie or the more traditional apple pie is topped with a layer of pie crust on top whilst the Dutch apple pie has a delicious crunchy crumb topping instead.

No one dessert is better than the other, they just depend on your actual preference.

I haven’t tried it with frozen apples so I am not exactly sure but I would maybe add a little more cornstarch to offset the liquid that might come out of the apples! Let us know how it works out!

Making 2 batches of these today! They sound wonderful. Just a head’s up on a typo-on Step 4 you said apple “cheesecake” bars.

Very good and surprisingly easy. I didn’t have some of the “finer detail items” – lemon juice, nutmeg – and left them out and it was still tasty. I just wanted to bake!! I used honey crisp apples since it was what we had. They were smaller sized and I went with four of them and, since we like it a little sweeter, added a little more sugar without incident.

I did catch a few typos in the recipe: it mentions “cheesecake bars” towards the end which scared me and I thought I had accidentally went to the wrong recipe! Also, “step one” under “the crust” mentions butter in the listed ingredients but doesn’t mention it in the written part so make sure you don’t forget it! Definitely an important part of that step.

A fabulous recipe nonetheless, however, and incredibly easy and tasty. Would definitely make again!
