LEt’s Chit Chat!

I ended up with a box of extra Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes a few holidays back and needed something quick to bring to my in-laws, so these chocolate Christmas tree cake truffles came to the rescue. They’re such an easy, no-bake holiday dessert and the perfect way to turn leftover Christmas Tree Cakes into something extra festive and delicious.

Why You’ll LOVE the Chocolate Version

This recipe is NOT the same as my classic white-cake Christmas Tree Cake Truffles. This version is:

  • Chocolate-forward, richer, and fudgier
  • Made with the Chocolate Christmas Tree Cakes (not the white ones)
  • Perfect for anyone who prefers a deep cocoa flavor
  • Slightly denser and brownie-like
  • Dipped in chocolate instead of white coating
  • A fun twist on the nostalgic childhood snack

If you want the classic version, grab my Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake Truffles (white cake version). But if you’re team chocolate… this is YOUR recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

Can I use the white Christmas Tree Cakes instead?

Use the chocolate ones for this recipe. If you want the classic version, I have a whole separate post for that.

My truffles feel soft. What do I do?

Pop them in the fridge or freezer for 10–20 minutes before dipping.

Can I double the recipe?

Absolutely, this is perfect for big batches and gifting.

What is the difference between cake pops and cake balls?

Cake balls are simply rolled cake truffles without a stick, while cake pops are the same mixture shaped onto a lollipop stick. Cake balls are quicker and easier to make, but both taste the same and use the same cake-crumb base.

What is the secret to dipping cake balls?

The secret is to chill the cake balls before dipping so they stay firm and don’t crumble. Melt the chocolate slowly so it’s smooth, use a dipping fork to let extra chocolate drip off, and add sprinkles before the coating sets.

Why are my cake balls falling apart?

If your cake balls crumble, the mixture is too dry. Mash the cakes more or add a tiny bit of frosting or melted chocolate to bring the mixture together.

How long do cake balls last?

Cracking happens when cold cake balls meet very warm chocolate. Let the truffles sit out for a minute after chilling so the temperatures are closer.
