These are the best chocolate covered marshmallows EVER!

I know I know, it sounds dramatic but this is one of those recipes that can literally made by a 5 year old (with your supervision of course) and will wow everyone!

Because at the end of the day we’re all just a bunch of grown up children who love a good textural treat around the holidays. I personally have proof of this because I took this over to my father in law’s house and this was the one thing he couldn’t stop talking about. So simple, yet something most of us can’t stop snacking on!

Why you will love these marshmallow treats?

  • Depending on what you need them for they can be decorated in a way to fit that specific event or holiday! Think pink sprinkles for Valentine’s day, Christmas sprinkles for Christmas, and green and gold for St Patrick’s day!
  • They are extremely easy to make and can become yours and your little ones tradition every holiday!
  • These can be thrown together in no time which is perfect when you have somewhere to be or a holiday party to attend but don’t want to show up empty handed.
  • They can be turned into delicious popsicle marshmallows by inserting a cake pop stick in them before dipping them in  the chocolate.

Ingredients to make Chocolate dipper marshmallow candies

  • Large marshmallows– You will need regular large marshmallows for this recipe. But you could also use home homemade marshmallowsrecipe too if you want to impress your guests even more! They can be made with simple vanilla extract, or even with vanilla bean paste for an extra touch of decadence!
  • Chocolate– I used semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe but feel free to use milk chocolate or even white chocolate if that is what you prefer!
  • Coconut oil– The coconut oil helps the chocolate harder a little quicker and form some sort of a shell. If yo udon’t have coconut oil, no worries, use shortening or a tiny bit of vegetable oil.
  • Toppings, I used chopped pecans, gold sugar, and little golden stars but the possibilities are endless. Top your marshmallows with whatever you prefer, think a white chocolate drizzle on top, crushed up candy canes, crushed up pretzels for a sweet and salty vibe, or even rainbow nonpareils!

how to make chocolate covered marshmallows?

Here are the step by step instructions for this recipe, but make sure to check the recipe card for a more detailed version!

  • Now is the time to decorate the marshmallow. While the chocolate is not completely set add your desired toppings and let it harden either at room temperature of in the refrigerator.
  • Melt the chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave-safe bowl. Stir it in between each increment to keep the chocolate from burning and seizing.
  • Using a skewer or a chocolate dipping tool, dip one marshmallow at a time in the melted chocolate then pull it out and let any excess chocolate drip for a little bit to get the extra chocolate off and get a clean finish.
  • Turn the marshmallow up right with the skewer fitting in between the fork tines and gently pull out the skewer. (If you are using a chocolate dipping tool, you don’t have to worry about this step)
  • Using the skewer slowly and carefully push the marshmallow off the fork and onto a wax paper or parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Chocolate covered marshmallows topping ideas

I love my chocolate marshmallows plain, but don’t get me wrong I will never say no to some nuts with my chocolate covered mallows! Here are more coating ideas for your holiday treats:

  • Nuts ( pistachios, almonds, peanuts…)
  • Colored sanding sugars
  • Crushed peppermint candy
  • Sprinkles
  • Cereals, I love using cinnamon toast crunch!
  • Absolutely not a freaking thing, enjoy them as is because they’re that good!

How long do chocolate covered Marshmallows last?

These an be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days. They can also be store in the fridge for a little longer.

Can I freeze these marshmallow treats?

To store your marshmallows in the freezer, place them in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag for up to two months. For added protection against moisture, double-wrap them before freezing. This ensures they stay fresh and maintain their texture when you’re ready to enjoy them. Thaw them on the counter at room temperature before enjoying them!

Stacked chocolate marshmallows

Do I need to refrigerate these chocolate coated marshmallows?

Well, like I said in the storage instructions they would last a little longer if you decide to keep them in the fridge but in my opinion the optimal temp for you to enjoy these is slightly chilled but not chilled enough that the marshmallow turns hard.

If it’s winter time and your house is a little chilly they should be fine to enjoy at room temperature, but if it’s summer time, I would pull them out of the fridge and let them sit for a few minutes before enjoying them!

    Hello,
Can a wafer or a biscuit be secured underneath these at all?
    Thank you.

What a good idea!! You can try sticking it with marshmallow fluff or with some melted chocolate, allowing that to set in the fridge fully before dipping everything in melted chocolate.

I made these on popsicle sticks for my kiddos end of year class party. They had voted for s’mores and these were the closest thing I could make for easy serving. I crumbled up some brown butter chocolate chip cookies (harder in consistency) and dipped them in the crumbs. Sooooo good and a huge hit. Honestly, I liked them better than s’mores. Thank you!

I have a quick question, does refrigerating the marshmallows overnight make them hard? If not, I’ll definitely give these a try for a friend gathering – it looks amazing.

It does but they soften right back up once you let them sit out for a few minutes.

    Hi
I just made this recipe, and have to say, Yummy! I absolutely love chocolate covered marshmallows especially around Easter time. I crave them anytime I hear anyone say chocolate covered marshmallows.
I bake and make candy just for fun, and for my grandchildren, I give my homemade candy to friends, family, co workers, and they love it every-time!
I am so disappointed in myself for not thinking about making these myself. Lol
I am a little concerned I will be making them year round now for myself, hahaa lol
I thank you for posting this so I can make it whenever I want to now!
I read a few comments and was so disappointed in some of these comments. Why do people feel the need to criticize people who are giving them a free recipe? I read in your recipe about adding the coconut oil, yet there is a comment from a lady saying, you did not add that in your recipe. 😮 🤷🏻‍♀️
Shame on those who can not seem to say Thank you. I think some people just need to go on and leave you alone, after all, when did they become so perfect?
I hope you have a great day, and again, Thank you so much for your recipe!

These turned out perfect. I tried twice this week to make them in a double boiler but believe my chocolate scorched both time and I had to throw all of it away twice. I went in search of another recipe and decided to try yours. It is so easy that you should rename it the No Fail Chocolate Covered Marshmallows.

Chahinez, thank you for replying! You probably should add that info in the recipe because it is only listed in the ingredients but nowhere does the recipe mention when, where, why or how to add the coconut oil.

I think I must be spacing out on something. What is the coconut oil used for? Did I miss seeing that part?

The coconut oil helps the chocolate harden a little quicker and have a shell like consistency. If you don’t have coconut oil, you could use 1/2 the amount so 1.5 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
      Hope this helped.

When do you add the coconut oil? Before melting chocolate? Or stir in after chocolate is melted?

Add it before melting the chocolate.
