This is the best Starbucks iced toasted vanilla oatmilk shaken espresso drink.

I literally impatiently wait for Starbucks to release their seasonal drink every quarter. This time they blessed us with the new iced toasted vanilla oatmilk shaken espresso. It has hints

Sure it is pretty simple and yes you might also notice that a few of the Starbucks drinks might taste pretty similar. But honestly, that shouldn’t take away from the joy you will experience when making yourself this refreshing iced espresso drink!

What is a shaken espresso?

A shaken espresso is as simple as it sounds. It pretty much is an espresso that’s been shaken with ice to make it extra cold and frothy, think of it like an espresso cocktail.

This drink is perfect for warm spring and summer days. So replace your energy drink with this iced coffee beverage for a delicious way to start your day.

Why you need to make this Starbucks copycat recipe!

  • The toasted vanilla flavor comes through so well in this recipe.
  • This recipe allows you to recreate your favorite Starbucks drink at home, be your own Starbucks barista!
  • It will allow you to save a ton of money given the fact that each drink costs about $5-$7 in stores.
  • You will be able to tweak this recipe to fit your desired sweetness, allowing you to control how much added sugar is in your drink.

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this iced starbucks shaken espresso. Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the full detailed ingredient measurements.

  • Vanilla bean pods– This is what we will be toasting for this recipe. I used a few vanilla bean pieces and the rest was vanilla bean paste to add extra
  • Vanilla bean paste– This is gonna be used to make our toasted vanilla syrup.
  • Granulated sugar– We will be using the granulated sugar to sweeten and make our syrup have notes of caramelized vanilla.
  • Espresso– Starbucks uses blonde roast espresso for their shaken espressos.
  • Oatmilk– I love using the Chobani vanilla oatmilk or extra creamy oatmilk for this drink since it yields something delicious!
  • Water– You will need a little water to make the syrup.

Substitutes

Here are a few substitute ingredients that you can use if you don’t have the above options.

If you don’t have vanilla bean pods, feel free to use more vanilla bean paste instead. Just know that you won’t get much of that toasty flavor.

If you don’t have oatmilk on hand you can also use almond milk, cashew milk, or even regular dairy milk if you don’t mind for it having dairy.

WHAT TO USE INSTEAD OF ESPRESSO FOR LATTES?

Before we got an espresso machine I used to use 2-3 teaspoons of instant coffee mixed with 3 tablespoons of hot water instead of espresso in my lattes!

You could also go with regular brewed coffee instead of espresso. That would make this drink a bit different but desperate times, call for desperate measures.

Frequently asked questions – FAQ

How to store leftover toasted vanilla syrup for coffee?

This recipe makes enough syrup for 4-5 drinks so you can store it in an air tight jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It’s so good though that I doubt it’ll stay that long!

Can I make this iced toasted vanilla oatmilk shaken espresso drink hot?

Yes and no. Hear me out, this drink has its own special technique that makes it unique. The shaking of the espresso with the ice is what gives this drink it’s unique attributes. So technically you can’t make the exact thing because you wouldn’t be able to shake a hot espresso with syrup.

But you can make it as a regular latte. Start with your toasted vanilla syrup at the bottom of your cup, add in the espresso shots then top it off with frothed or hot oatmilk. So it will taste pretty similar but in hot drink form.

WHAT IS THE BEST ICE FOR STARBUCKS drinks?

This might be the second most important question that you asked yourself. Starbucks makes their ice using triple filtered water which makes the ice taste not bad at all actually. So when freezing water to make your ice cubes, go for filtered water whenever possible to get the best-flavored drink!

Homemade toasted vanilla syrup for coffee

Is making this drink really cheaper than just getting it from the store?

100% yes! I did the math and I’m here to prove it to you.

When it comes to making the toasted vanilla syrup I can see why you might think that it’s a little expensive and worry that you might spend more making it homemade rather than just buying the drink from the store because of the vanilla bean pod. So here is the breakdown.

Toasted vanilla syrup $5.75 for 4-5 servings.

  • ½ Vanilla bean pod $5, this is the most pricey item on this recipe.
  • Vanilla bean paste $0.50
  • Sugar $0.25

Iced Toasted vanilla oatmilk shaken espresso homemade $2.01

  • Toasted vanilla syrup $1.43
  • Espresso $0.25
  • Oatmilk $0.33

So overall I think making it homemade is better because you will know exactly what’s in it plus it will reduce the cost of your drink to about $2 rather than $7!

Can I use another milk for this copycat version of the iced toasted vanilla oatmilk shaken espresso?

Yes! A few other options are:

  • Soy milk
  • Whole milk
  • Almond milk
  • Cashew milk
  • Or even a mix of a few!

  • ½ cup oatmilk or any dairy or non dairy alternative you prefer.

Instructions

Toasted Vanilla syrup

  • Pour the water, sugar, and vanilla bean paste over it and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to simmer and let the mixture infuse for 8-10 minutes.
  • Store the syrup in a heat-proof mason jar or glass container and let it cool down fully. Keep the vanilla pieces in the syrup to continue infusing our syrup. When using the syrup don't add in the vanilla bean pods into the drink.
