- Light brown sugar & granulated sugar– This cookie uses a mixture of sugars to get them to have the perfect consistency and texture.
- Shortening & butter– Chick-Fil-A actually uses shortening in their cookies so we are using a mixture of butter flavored Crisco as well as butter to give these the perfect texture.
- Honey – This is the secret ingredient that will add a nice depth of flavor here.
- Egg– This will be the binding agent of our cookies. I like to use large eggs at room temperature.
- Vanilla extract- Vanilla pairs so well with the honey flavors of this cookie.
- Flour– All purpose flour works great for this cookie recipe.
- Oats– A little old-fashioned oats go a long way in this recipe.
- Baking powder & baking soda– These will give our cookies a little extra height.
- Salt– Always use a little salt in your baked goods to balance out the sweetness of your cookies.
- Chocolate chunks – Use milk chocolate chunks and semi-sweet chocolate chunks to get that iconic Chick Fil A flavor.

Frequently asked questions – FAQ
Do I need to chill the cookie dough?
If you have the time, I prefer the chilled dough method because it results in cookies that are a tad bit thicker since the chilling allows the flour to absorb more liquid. It also allows the flavors of the chocolate chunk cookies to develop even more.
If you decide to make these cookies without chilling the dough, bake them for 1-2 minutes less.
How to store these Chick Fil A cookies?
These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. You can also pop them in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 7 days.
Once you’re ready to enjoy them pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to get them ooey gooey again and enjoy!
Can I freeze chick fil a chocolate chunk cookies?
Yes! You can also freeze these baked cookies in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Once you’re ready to enjoy them thaw them in the fridge overnight or on the countertop for less.
My favorite way to thaw these is to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds and enjoy them!

Can I make mini Chick Fil A cookies?
Yes, you can! Instead of making 16 larger cookies, you will be able to make 32 smaller ones. Instead of baking them for 13-14 minutes, bake them for 10 minutes instead.
Do Chick-Fil-A cookies have nuts?
These cookies don’t have nuts in them. They do have oats which create sun a fun texture but if you want to add in some nuts, I would highly recommend adding in toasted walnuts ot even toasted pecans!

I am planning to substitute the shortening with ghee and coconut oil at a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. still 1:1 to the shortening. Just curious if you had any recommendations for this. I’m guessing I should still chill the dough?
I’ve never tried using those substitutions for this recipe so I’m not sure. But yes, definitely chill the dough so they don’t spread out too much.
This recipe is a spot on copy cat! Every time I make these they disappear immediately!
Glad to hear it!
Will it be okey to just use butter and no shortening?
Shortening is different from butter in that it is 100% fat and contains no water, so no steam is created during baking. On the other hand, butter does contain a bit of water. The shortening is preferable because it results in a dough that’s softer, flakier, and more tender.

Hi, this part, step 5, I don’t understand what split in half then mash together with the ragged edge on top means. Can you please explain that for me? Thank you!
Hi! I can understand it can be a bit confusing. So when you rip the two pieces in half, turn both ripped sides up, and stack them on top of each other from that position. both jagged sides should be facing up when you stack them.
Super easy recipe but so delicious! Swapped the milk chocolate for dark chocolate and it was even more decadent. Very close to the chick fil a cookies, amazing!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing recipe! Everyone loves these cookies when I make them. This recipe has become a staple in my house! I use it as my go to cookie base- m&ms, raisins, anything!
It really is a good base for all the other cookies! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I’m very excited to try this recipe! I just ate a Chick fil A cookie and thought, ‘I bet someone has figured out the recipe,’ and found yours right away! :). So many 5 star reviews! Question: if I wanted to make them a little less sweet, would it be better to decrease the white sugar or the brown sugar, or both?
Thanks so much!
So excited for you to try them! 😊 If you want to make them a little less sweet, I’d recommend reducing the white sugar rather than the brown sugar. The brown sugar helps with moisture and chewiness, so keeping it will maintain that soft texture. Let me know how they turn out for you! 🍪💕
IF I’M USING A 3 TBSP COOKIE SCOOP. HOW MINUTES SHOULD DAY BAKE FOR?
I’m not certain because I haven’t tried it but I would guess around 10 minutes.
WHAT COOKIE SCOOP SIZE DID YOU USE? AND HOW MANY TBSPS?
4 tablespoons or 1/4 cup.
You cracked the code. These cookies are delicious. I went by Chick-fil-A this afternoon and was craving one of their chocolate chip cookies but the line was so long I passed it by. When I stopped by the store I checked out your recipe and picked up what I needed to make them
They are just as good if not better than Chick-ful-A. Thanks so much for figuring out the perfect recipe!!
OMG thank you for the kind words!😊
Very, very good! Clear instructions.
Thank you! I’m glad you liked the recipe 😁
Hi! Excited to try now that I live in Central America and I miss CFA. Can I sub AP flour for wheat flour? Gracias!
Yes, you can swap all-purpose flour for wheat flour, but keep in mind Whole wheat flour absorbs more liquid and makes cookies denser and possibly drier. You may need to add 1–2 extra teaspoons of liquid (like milk or water) to keep the dough from being too dry.
Do I have to use salt if I’m using salted butter in this recipe
I like to add extra salt but feel free to omit.
