This recipe was a little bit of an impromptu but this green smoothie bowl will be the one thing your body will thank you for when you are suffering from these horrible allergies and hopefully will help you feel better in no time!
A nice and cold Allergy relief smoothie bowl with spirulina!
I first wanna tell you guys a little bit about the spirulina I used in this smoothie bowl! ( I am actually not sponsored by them or anything but I just believe in this product and their great service)
I got this 100 grams spirulina powder bag from the Bulksupplements company. It was a sample that I received them last year, I personally think that it is super cool of them to send out such a large item as a sample after I purchased a larger sized item. This is not something that other companies do often at all!
A couple of days ago I felt like I caught something… I’ve long been suffering from seasonal allergies ( rhinitis ) but was able to get that under control so I thought it probably wasn’t it. Plus it had slightly different symptoms.
I started taking Dayquil as well as using Afrin which is a nasal decongestant. It is recommended not to use it for more than three days, which I definitely tried not to do. So last night was the third day and I had told myself that this was the last time I was gonna use it to help me sleep.
After spraying it a couple of times in each nostril, I started feeling a runny nose that itched a little extra… All of a sudden I started sneezing, and it didn’t stop after that.
Since I was trying to be good about sleeping at a certain time, I went to bed at 11PM, cut out all distractions and waited to fall asleep… Unfortunately, my body was not having it!
Around 2AM, I decided that it was time for me to go and get some melatonin to help myself fall asleep. It took about another hour before that even happened. And guess what!? I woke up at 6Am…
So for anyone that knows me, they know that if I do not sleep I do not function. I literally turn into a zombie, I walk this earth with a massive headache, and to that, there was this allergy feeling added to the mix, so I was not happy!
I obviously went on Pinterest and started looking up what would be some good allergy relief recipes that I could easily make at my house… and to be honest there was not that much.
Sure, there was multiple lists of what specific food could aid in your malaise, but nothing that was too straight forward. So after gathering the strength to get up, I went to the kitchen to make my smoothie bowl.
I knew I wanted to put some spirulina powder in there as well as raw local honey. the rest I was going to have to figure out. It did help to have some frozen fruits ready for me to use!

So I did my research and found out a little more about food products that might help with allergies.
- Spirulina- It is said that one teaspoon per day of spirulina would stop the release of histamine that causes the symptoms of allergies ( itchiness, runny nose, itching)
- Raw local honey– Raw honey is a great option when dealing with seasonal allergies. It helps by exposing you to very small amounts of local pollen which will then help you build immunities for them.
- Chia seeds- Chia seeds are very high in Omega-3, this, in turn, helps reduce the immune responses associated with allergies!
- Strawberries- Strawberries have quite a bit of vitamin C, 1/2 a cup of strawberries has 49 milligrams of the vitamin and only 27 calories. This vitamin also prevents the formation of histamine. It also reduces inflammation and allergic responses.
To maximize the effectiveness of vitamin C, it is best to take it with bioflavonoids ( these are super antioxidants found in many natural foods). Strawberries are a great source of this!

- 3/4 cup frozen banana slices
- 3/4 cup cup frozen strawberry slices
- 1/4 cup frozen greek yogurt
- 1/4 tbsp spirulina
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- shredded toasted coconut
- hemp seeds
- fresh fruits
- bee pollen
- First, start by soaking the 2 tbsp of chia seeds with 4 tbsp of warm water.
- In a high-speed food processor, blend the frozen fruit, the yogurt, the spirulina, the honey, and the soaked chia seeds.
- blend until smooth, and chia seeds still visible. serve in a bowl and top with the desired toppings listed above.I used strawberries, hemp seeds, and shredded coconut.

For my coconuts, I decided to toast them myself since I only had untoasted at home. I used a regular pan and started toasting my coconuts on medium heat stirring pretty frequently to avoid burning them
After toasting my coconuts I lightly drizzled them with some honey to accentuate the natural sweetness.
This helped with the overall texture of the whole bowl. I don’t know about you but for me, I always need something crunchy with my smoothie bowl or acai bowls!
There is something about crunchy and frozen/cold things that go so well together!
