Peanut butter chocolate rice krispie treats

This is the best chocolate peanut butter rice krispie treats recipe

One of the ultimate leveled up versions of krispie treats has to be this specific version! It combines all of the nostalgic flavors of creamy peanut butter and marshmallow rice krispies and adds a delicious layer of chocolate on top. Now, I know this is also very loved by children but it definitely takes the treat to a whole new level compared to its counter part.

When I am feeling a little extra fancy I like to make it using dark chocolate for a balance of flavors, so definitely a must try it you enjoy the combination of dark chocolate and peanut butter as well!

What’s so special about these peanut butter rice krispie treats?

I love this puffed rice recipe because it takes a childhood favorite and turns it into an adult delicacy. Here are a few more reasons why I think you should make this:

  • It is the perfect treat for peanut butter and chocolate lovers.
  • Never was there a quicker treat recipe.
  • The chocolate peanut butter layer is creamy and has a chocolate ganache texture.
  • It is the best treat to bring to family gathering or make for celebrations.
  • This is a microwave rice krispy recipe, AKA you can even make it in your dorm room!
  • They are thick and chewy, and packed with peanut butter flavor.
  • The perfect comfort food recipe that will have you reminiscing of the good old days.

Ingredients to make chocolate peanut butter rice krispie bars

Here are the ingredients you will need to make these homemade rice krispie treats:

  • Marshmallows– I used the large marshmallows but you can also use mini marshmallows.
  • Butter– Use salted butter to give more depth of flavor to your rice krispies.
  • Peanut butter– Use smooth peanut butter for the best texture. The peanut butter is used in the rice krispy treats as well as in the chocolate glaze.
  • Rice Krispies Cereal– This is the base of the recipe.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips– The chocolate chips will be melted and used to glaze our rice krispy treats.
  • Toasted peanuts– I like to top my chocolate rice krispy treats with some chopped toasted peanut to give them that little oomph! But feel free to use a sprinkle of flakey sea salt instead for something a little different.

Pro tip- If you want your rice krispie treats to be a little extra soft and chewy add a tablespoon of corn syrup to melted marshmallow peanut butter mixture when you’re combining everything together.

Can I use chunky peanut butter?

Sure! If you do use chunky peanut butter make sure to use 3-4 tablespoons instead of 2 tablespoons. It will add a more nutty flavor which I’m sure peanut lovers would enjoy!

Can I use natural peanut butter?

This rice krispy treat recipe isn’t really a healthy one. So try to stay away form the natural peanut butter because you risk having the mixture separate which will then lead to your rice krispy treats not setting up properly.

How to make peanut butter chocolate rice krispie treats

  • First start by lining an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper then set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl start by melting the marshmallows in the microwave for 30-60 seconds or until fully melted. Add in the melted butter and melted peanut butter and stir until combined. Add in the rice krispies and gently fold until fully coated. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and gently flatten into a firm layer using a rubber spatula.
  • You can also make this recipe in a large heavy pot if you don’t have a microwave.

  • Add in the chocolate chips and the peanut butter into a medium microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30 second increments until fully melted. Pour the melted chocolate over the rice krispy treats and gently spread using a spatula. Sprinkle with the toasted peanuts, then refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour or until the chocolate is fully set.

How to store peanut butter chocolate rice krispies

You can store these rice krispie treats in an airtight container for up to 1 week at room temperature. This is how I like to store them so that I can easily sneak a few when the cravings hit.

Can I freeze rice krispy treats?

Absolutely! Tightly wrap them or place them in an airtight container and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight then let them get back to room temperature before enjoying.

How do you keep rice krispie treats from getting hard?

There are a few ways to keep your rice krispie treats from getting too hard. The first one has to be using fresh marshmallows, stay away from stale marshmallows because they will ruin the texture.

The second trick is to cook the marshamallows over medium low heat because we don’t want to overcook them because otherwise that sugar will make these treats hard.

The third way to keep them soft is to store them at room temperature and not in the fridge. If you need to keep them in the fridge, allow them to get back to room temp before enjoying.

Tips to make the best PB chocolate rice krispies

Here are a few things that will help you make the best rice krispies of your life!

  • Make sure to pack your rice krispy treats tightly so that they stick together when the time to slice them comes.
  • When you spread the chocolate mixture on the rice krispy treats, gently tap the pan on the counter to even out the thick chocolate layer.
  • Don’t store your rice krispy treats in the fridge or they’ll become too hard. You can store them in the fridge if you want them to last longer, just make sure that you are letting them get back to room temperature before you enjoy them!
  • Keep in mind that you can use any chocolate you like, we used semi-sweet here but dark chocolate, white chocolate, or even milk chocolate would go so well!
