Halloween frozen banana

Spooky Halloween snacks… Those things that you end up having at home and can’t stop eating. More often than not they are not the best for you. Loaded with sugar and refined ingredients… Sure, they are okay in small amounts but I used to binge on all the Halloween candies.

This year, I wanted to make something a little different… Spooky treats that you can enjoy for yourself or give your children without feeling guilty at all. Today’s recipe is called boonanans. Cute name isn’t it?!

Boonanas are a healthy frozen banana dipped in yogurt then topped with these mini chocolate chips to create the spooky ghost’s mouth and eyes. Seriously, I don’t know of any activity that’s more fun than making these with the kids 🙂

I have seen many of these Halloween frozen banana ghost recipes online, but many of them required you to dip the banana in white chocolate. Since we are going for something a little healthier, I decided to dip my banana ghosts in vanilla yogurt to get is some extra protein as well as probiotics without all the sugar that’s in the white chocolate.

These boonanas or frozen banana ghosts popsicles are the best healthy Halloween snack!

Ingredients to make these boonanas or frozen banana ghosts treat?

These healthy halloween snacks are the best because they really don’t require too many ingredients. Here is what you will need to make this spooky healthy treat:

  • Bananas– I use not too ripe bananas to make sure that they stay intact when I insert the popsicle sticks in them.
  • Vanilla yogurt– I used Activia vanilla yogurt but you can use any vanilla yogurt you’d like
  • Mini chocolate chips – You won’t need too many chocolate chips for these just enough to make 8.

How to make boonanas or Halloween frozen banana ghosts?

First, start by lining your baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat mat. Now peel the bananas and cut each banana in half. Now slice each half in half crosswise you have 8 pieces of banana in total. Carefully insert the popsicle sticks into the bottom of each banana then place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Place the bananas in the freezer for 30 minutes to an hour, or until they are completely frozen. When you are ready to dip them in yogurt, pour the yogurt into a tall glass and dip each one in order to cover the whole thing. Place the yogurt coated banana back on the baking sheet and place 3 mini chocolate chips on the ghost bananas to make the eyes and mouth. Repeat the process until you are completely done with each banana. Return to the freezer for 20 more minutes.

Enjoy these frozen ghost bananas immediately or place them in an airtight container and store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. These make for the perfect snack for the little ones.

How to store banana popsicles?

To store these Halloween banana popsicles, place them in an airtight container and store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. I love these because they are the perfect grab and go snack when you want something quick and healthy.

I love that you use yogurt in lieu of white chocolate to create a healthier snack! The banana’s taste good themselves without adding the extra sugar. I mixed vanilla and mango Greek yogurt which was very tasty. The trick is to use enough yogurt in the glass when you dip the banana’s in so the whole piece is covered with yogurt, avoiding the extra step of dabbing some at the bottom (which I had to do). By the time they were finished (frozen), that was a minor issue and they tasted great! Thank you!
