Hot chocolate bomb drink

This recipe has been so long overdue. I was supposed to make it last year around the holiday season as a gift for everyone and to share on the blog. I believe I got too lazy, and the short days didn’t help for shooting the recipe photos. So I didn’t do it.

Now I regret not making these and sharing them with you sooner because they are freaking amazing! Especially if you’re on lockdown and need something fun to do during this quarantine.

These hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows are the most fun thing to make ever!

I have a secret… During my last year of college I was a sucked for 7/11 hot chocolate. I know, lame… But I want (and still am) a broke college student and that just hit the spot.

I still feel like 7/11 hot chocolate from the self serve dispenser is life because you can add milk to it, you can add coffee to it, you can add caramel macchiato to it. You can pretty much do whatever you heart desire and make the drink of your dreams. My inner barista was screaming inside and all this for less $2!!

But now that I’m supposedly an adult, I’m trying to start making all these things that I love right here at home, especially during the corona pandemic too!

What’s so special about these hot chocolate bombs?

I love these hot chocolate bomb because of so many reasons, here are a few:

  • They are so cute
  • The best Christmas stocking stuffers.
  • They are easy to make
  • Only require 3 ingredients
  • They are super fun to watch melt in your hot milk cup

What is a hot chocolate bomb?

A hot chocolate bomb is a sphere made out of melted chocolate chips and filled with hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows. It’s called a bomb because the filling is supposed to explode when you pour hot water over it releasing all the marshmallows and hot chocolate mix that we filled our hot chocolate bombs with!

Ingredients for hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows

To make your hot chocolate bombs at home, here are the ingredients that you need:

  • Chocolate chips- I used semi sweet chocolate chips for the hot chocolate bombs you see on the photos but you can also use dark chocolate or milk chocolate.
  • Hot chocolate mix– I used the salted caramel hot chocolate from Trader Joes for this one.
  • Mini marshmallows– You can use ani mini marshmallows you’d like, I used vegan mini marshmallows and they work great!
  • Gold powder (optional)- You can also coat your silicone mold with gold powder for a super festive treat.

What mold should I use for these hot chocolate bombs.

I used a smaller silicone mold for these hot chocolate bombs, it makes the perfect 1 cup serving but if you end up wanting to make bigger ones or just have larger molds at home, go right ahead. They will hold a lot more goodness AKA marshmallows and would be much easier to fill.

Keep in mind that you might not have as many as I did in this recipe and that you might need more ingredients to fill all the ones you have. So just prepare accordingly 🙂

How to make hot chocolate bombs for the holidays?

First, start by melting the chocolate chips in the microwave-safe bowl in 30 seconds increment, stir between each one.. Keep microwaving in 30-second increments until the chocolate if fully melted.

  • Melted chocolate chips

If using the gold dust, take a pastry brush, dip it in the golden dusts and brush each cavity with the powder.

Add a tablespoon of the melted chocolate into each mold cavity. Using the back of a spoon, smooth out the chocolate on the sides of each mold. If there isn’t enough chocolate to coat the inside of the molds add a little bit at a time and smooth it over again. Place the mold in the freezer for 15 minutes or until the chocolate is completely solid.

Pull out the hardened chocolate by pulling and gently stretching the silicone mold. The chocolate will pull away from the mold and you can either remove it from there using your hands (I like to wear gloves for this step to avoid finger prints on the chocolate) or flip your mold onto a parchment lined baking sheet and push the top gently while lifting the mold. If you are working in a hot kitchen and notice your chocolate domes starting to melt, put them back in the freezer right away to harden again.

Now, you can slightly heat up a pan or a plate, place them on your work surface and proceed to fill up a dome of chocolate with 1 tablespoon of hot chocolate mix and about 6 marshmallows. Now, press one of the empty chocolate domes against the warm plate or pan to slightly melt the rim. Place your empty chocolate dome over the filled one and gently press to seal. Work fast, as we don’t want our chocolate spheres to melt.

Do I have to temper my chocolate?

I did not temper my chocolate for this recipe, but you absolutely can if you would like. Tempering your chocolate will result in a shinier shell which is always better especially if you are giving these as a gift.

How to enjoy hot chocolate bombs?

Alright, you made your hot chocolate bombs and now you’re wondering how you’re supposed to have them. Well, that’s the fun part if you ask me 🙂

Place one hot chocolate bomb at the bottom of your mug and pour very hot milk over it. The chocolate layer will slowly melt and will release the hot chocolate mix and the marshmallows. Give it a good stir and enjoy your warm and cozy hot chocolate drink!

How much milk should I use for 1 hot chocolate bomb?

Because the mold that I used isn’t huge, I find that these hot chocolate bombs taste best when you use 1 cup or 8 ounces of milk. Just make sure that it is really hot so that the chocolate will melt for sure.

Storing your homemade chocolate bombs

When you make these hot chocolate treats, you will need to store them in an airtight container in the fridge or they might melt depending on the temperature in your house.

Tips to make the best holiday hot chocolate bombs

When making this hot chocolate creation, you will need to keep these few tips in mind.

  • Make sure that the bowl that you’re melting the chocolate in is fully dry– Chocolate doesn’t mix well with water so dry your bowl and spatula fully.
  • Make sure that the mold is fully coated in chocolate to have a sturdy hot chocolate bomb- Enough chocolate is key to keep these hot chocolate bombs intact when you fill them up.
  • Work quickly to assemble the chocolate spheres- The chocolate spheres are pretty fragile, so work fast to avoid them melted all over the place.
  • Wear gloves if possible- Our hands tend to get warm very quickly and that can leave finger prints on your chocolate.
  • If the chocolate is melting too quickly place them back in the freezer for a few minutes.
