8 Tips on How to STOP Late Night Sweet Cravings!
#1-Balance your hormones
You’d be surprised by how much your hormones have to do with your non-stop sugar cravings!
When our hormones are imbalanced, our insulin level takes a hit which will then throw off our blood sugar. According to Clean food crush “Obesity, unpredictable weight gain, acne, and late night cravings are often all rooted in endocrine issues”
The one way to help yourself stop your late night sugar cravings when the root cause is a hormonal imbalance is to nip it in the bud.
What I mean by that is that to help stop your body from craving all those carbs and sugars you will first have to deal with the root cause of the problem.
Below I will give you a list of things that could help you balance your hormones:
- Make sure to get 8 hours of sleep every night
- Use blackout curtains to make sure that no light comes in and wakes you up when you are sleeping Drink holy basil tea or supplement with adaptogens to help your cells deal with stress a little better
- Cut out processed foods and eat plenty of unprocessed foods
- Drink more water
- Have more Omega 3’s in your diet (flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, kidney beans…)
#2-Eat fruits instead to stop your late night sweet cravings
You do not have to cut sugar completely when trying to STOP your late night sweet cravings. Going keto is cool and all but fruits contain lots of fiber and vitamins which is so so necessary for your digestion as well as your health in general.
In 2017, when I tried to stop by unhealthy cravings and snacking habits at night I would go for watermelon, apple slices, or any sorts of berries. Going for those low sugar fruits helped me stay sane because I felt like I was indulging in sweets but I was actually feeding my body wholesome ingredients that not only STOP my late night sweet cravings but also nourish my body accordingly!
So next time you feel a late night sweet craving coming, make yourself Berry Chia Seed parfait or a fruit bowl topped with some greek yogurt to get some probiotics in as well.
#3-Brush your teeth when the cravings hit to stop your late night cravings
This might seem like such a weird little trick but I promise you it works!!
When you brush your teeth after a meal the food doesn’t taste as good. There is that toothpaste after taste that stays in your mouth for a while so when it comes to snacking after brushing my teeth I completely avoid it.
Brushing your teeth also signals to your brain that that’s it, no more food is coming in so find something else to do! Brushing your teeth right after dinner or your last nighttime snack will help you STOP all late night cravings because let’s face it most people don’t really feel like eating after brushing their teeth or using mouth wash.
And if you are still having a hard time stopping late night cravings, brush your teeth every time you are craving something. This is going to be obnoxious at first but as you get used to not having all those late night cravings you won’t have to brush your teeth as much
#4-Do NOT buy unhealthy sugary snacks
Don’t we all wish we had unlimited will power? This won’t be an issue, we would all buy all the unhealthy snacks and save them for holidays or similar times… But we do not. We absolutely run out of will power, add to that all that daily stress and exhaustion and that pantry gets raided by 8 PM.
So to avoid that, the best thing to do with to NOT allow all that junk to enter your house. By not purchasing those cookies and chocolate candy bars you are doing yourself a favor. Instead stock up on healthy snacks like; nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, veggie sticks, and fresh fruits!
This will not only help you be healthier during the day but when those gnarly late night sugar cravings come you’ll have nothing to feed them!
#5-Plan a nighttime snack
When I said tips on how to STOP late night sweet cravings I didn’t say we are stopping everything! Have a little piece of dark chocolate or a fresh smoothie with fruits, flax seed, chia seed, and maca to stop that sweet tooth craving as well as help balance out your hormones.
#5-Drink a cup of hot tea
When it comes to stopping late night cravings I have the ULTIMATE weapon… TEA! It might not seem like much but having some teas that might help with reducing sweet cravings will save your life. When I was trying to cut out sugars I would have fennel tea every time those sugar cravings came. Not only fennel tea helps tame your sweet cravings but it also regulates your appetite, boosts metabolism, and reduces stress… Best of all it has a little hint of sweetness within it!
I also like teas that make me feel like I am having dessert, for example, the Tazo dessert tea edition or the Stash dessert inspired teas
- This bundle of butterscotch blondie, Glazed lemon loaf, and Vanilla bean macaron
- This Bundle of Salted caramel mate and White chocolate mocha
#6-Create a bedtime routine
Many times, people’s nighttime routine is what throws them off track. You’ve been good all day but now you’re home from school or work and as per usual you like to go binge-watch The Office and snack on some ice cream, Oreos, and caramel popcorn. It honestly feels odd if you start not doing that anymore, so slowly reduce your screen time, give yourself an hour or two of screen-free time before bed to stretch, wash your face and do that beauty routine you’ve always wanted to do, read a book and unwind.
This can be part of your new mindfulness routine as well because not only does it help break your habits of bad snacking but it also will help lower your stress and anxiety levels too!
#7-Be more mindful
Stress has often a lot to do with our super sugary cravings!
Take some time to chill and relax, have yourself a cup of tea and do some deep breathing to help rid your body of all that stress. I also like to take Ashwagandha to help my stress levels, since it is an adaptogen it helps me destress on a cellular level. By being more mindful you will be able to control and STOP your late night sweet cravings like a pro.
If you’ve incorporated all of these tips into your daily routines, give yourself times. There is going to be days where it is a lot harder than others but be gentle with yourself. Take care of yourself and know why you are doing this.
